Antibiotics Only Work on Bacteria

Antibiotics work by targeting specific structures or processes in bacterial cells. Viruses don't have those structures. Giving a patient antibiotics for a cold, the flu, or most sore throats and coughs does nothing to clear the virus — and contributes to antibiotic resistance, one of the most serious public health threats we face. Resistant bacteria are harder — and sometimes impossible — to treat. This is why your provider won't prescribe antibiotics unless there's clinical reason to believe a bacterial infection is present.

It's worth noting that most upper respiratory infections — colds, coughs, most sore throats, most sinus congestion — are viral.
